Actually, it is highly likely that among the millions of existing apps, many already pre-date your initials! Illustration 6: Alphabet soup.īrands with short names or multi-letter abbreviations can safely choose them as a logo and count themselves lucky. Even if your “initial-mark” does get accepted, you will not be able to avoid use of the same letter by a different app. Trademark offices in many countries refuse trademarks for single letters. The registered brand name does not provide protection for its initials. While this may be an understandable solution for brands with high pre-existing brand awareness, it is a bad strategy from a legal protection perspective. A common solution is to use the brand name’s first letter in a specific font or style. Limited space is a particular constraint for icon design: brand names are often too long to include. It doesn’t mean that descriptive app icons cannot function as trademarks at all, as testified by the fact that most people will recognize the icon for WhatsApp above. #Rounded corner app icon generator registrationApart from the distinctiveness issue, a rationale for excluding such elements from registration as trademarks is that registration would give an unjustified monopoly to a single market player. This condition is somewhat counter-intuitive, as many marketers consider descriptive elements as logical entry points to guide consumers. Illustration 2: Examples of visual descriptiveness. But when you have more than 50 views, the order changes. Maybe you haven’t interacted with them much on Instagram. If you’re friends with somebody on one of those services, Instagram takes those interactions into account. Many Instagram users are also on WhatsApp, and all three of these companies are owned by Meta.Īs a result, Instagram has access to your interactions on Facebook and WhatsApp. While it’s possible to have only an Instagram account, Instagram strongly encourages users to sign up for Facebook. Remember, Instagram doesn’t stand alone as a social media service. If someone is a stranger and has never interacted with you before, they’ll be near the bottom of the list. But it seems to be related to how much you and the other person have interacted with each other. How does Instagram know this? It’s a trade secret, and they’re not telling. To drive engagement, Instagram will populate those spots with the people you’re most interested in. Furthermore, most people never scroll past the top few story viewers on the list. Instagram is all about engagement, and they want to show you the people you’re most interested in. Instead, Instagram switches things up once your story gets its 51st view.Īt that point, the Instagram algorithm kicks in. If you were trying to find a particular person, it would be difficult to do so. But at that point, you’re already looking at a fairly long list that likely includes a bunch of strangers. ![]() In fact, this reverse chronological order is exactly how it works, at least until you have over 50 viewers. The use of emoticons can be traced back to the 19th century, and they were commonly used in casual or humorous writing. Certain complex character combinations can only be accomplished in a double-byte language, giving rise to very complex forms, sometimes known by their romanized Japanese name of kaomoji. In web forums, instant messengers and online games, text emoticons are often automatically replaced with small pictures, which came to be called emoticons as well. The word "emoticon" is a blend of the English words emotion (or emote) and icon. Over the years, many kinds of emoticons have been created, and now there are hundreds of known emoticons. Emoticons are often used to tell a reader about the general tone of a statement, and can change or improve the reading of plain writing.
